Join us in Our Race for Awareness

Throughout 2019, we have a host of both running and volunteering opportunities to support our fundraising runners! If you’re interested in either (or both!) keep an eye on this page as we’ll keep it updated with new opportunities as they arise! JOIN US! And help raise urgently needed awareness of Kawasaki Disease. There’s an event here for everyone! Which will you do?

**Fun Mile for Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day- 25 & 26 January 2019**

On Friday 25 January and Saturday 26 January (Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day) we’re inviting primary schools, nurseries, secondary school, clubs and teams from work (including YOUR office!) to walk (or run) a mile for Kawasaki Disease awareness! It’s an event that EVERYONE can take part in, even tots – grandparents too. Oh, and everyone in between! Join us and help us make Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day 2019 the BIGGEST YET!

Fancy organising a Fun Mile for Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day? It can be done at lunchtime, before work – anytime!  We can help you raise awareness in your community, with friends and family! Just imagine if we had HUNDREDS of organisations taking part…. What incredible impact that would make!

How can I get involved?

Apply here – and tell us what sort of group you want to do your Fun Mile with, and roughly how many people you expect to be taking part! This is just so we can send you out the right materials to help you make your event a success.

Thinking about approaching a school? TOP TIPspeak to school NOW! They will likely be keen, but need time to plan it in to their busy schedules.

How to raise awareness with a Fun Mile

We’ll send you TEMPERS for everyone involved. Our pack of info will include a letter from our Founder describing why raising awareness of Kawasaki Disease is so very important. We’ll send you a poster for you to customise with info about your event, and display prominently so people get to know more about Kawasaki Disease. Just by organising your event you’ll grow a Kawasaki Conversation in your community.

Ask people for a £1 donation to take part – and the funding will help us in our work to grow awareness too!

You could…

  • Wear red – as you walk, one red item of clothing is quite fun to do!
  • Raise money with donations for Wristbands – we’ll send you everything you need for this and remember, we have junior and adult wristbands
  • Have a donation pot on your desk, on reception, at your club (or in the pub!) for the week in the run up to Awareness Day
  • Do your Fun Mile at lunchtime, after work – or if doing it with a school, do it as part of a PE session!

Just get in touch and we’ll help you make your Fun Mile a PHENOMENAL success!

What is Kawasaki Disease?

Kawasaki Disease is predominantly a childhood illness though it can affect people of any age. Its cause is unknown. Kawasaki Disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Awareness of Kawasaki Disease is currently low and it is often mistaken for other common childhood illnesses, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Children who go untreated or who are treated later face higher risks of developing complications including lifelong heart damage. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to better outcomes.

Kawasaki Disease – why haven’t I heard about this before?

Kawasaki Disease is increasingly common in the U.K, globally cases are rising fast – but it remains little known by doctors and the general public alike. We want to change this! Too many children and young people today have heart damage because of Kawasaki Disease. The consequences of this can be very serious and can be lifelong …help us change this.
